Don’t Know Your Birth Time? Here’s How to Still Use BaZi

One of the most common questions we receive at Ondo Destiny is this:

“I don’t know my exact birth time. Can I still use BaZi?”

The answer is yes — and this guide will show you exactly how.

Why Birth Time Matters in BaZi

In BaZi, your exact birth time determines your Hour Pillar (시주) — the fourth and final pillar of your Four Pillars chart.

The Hour Pillar reveals your deepest aspirations and private inner world, your relationship with children, the direction of your later years in life, and hidden talents and inner drives.

Without the Hour Pillar, your chart is incomplete — but it is still enormously revealing.

What You Can Still Learn Without Your Birth Time

Even without your Hour Pillar, your BaZi chart reveals:

  • Your Day Master — the most important character in your entire chart
  • Your Year and Month Pillars — covering your ancestry, early life, career energy, and social personality
  • Your Five Elements balance (partially, without Hour Pillar)
  • Your Luck Pillars — the major 10-year cycles of your life
  • Annual and Monthly Luck cycles
  • Ten Gods for three pillars
  • Hidden Stems for three pillars

In fact, many BaZi masters consider the Day and Month Pillars to be the most important pillars in the chart — making a three-pillar reading still deeply meaningful.

How to Use the Calculator Without Your Birth Time

Simply check the “Unknown time” box in the calculator before clicking Calculate Four Pillars. The calculator will generate your complete three-pillar chart — Year, Month, and Day — without the Hour Pillar.

What If I Only Know the Approximate Time?

If you have a general idea of your birth time — for example, you know you were born in the morning or late at night — you can still make an educated guess about your Hour Pillar.

01:00 – 03:00丑 Ox
03:00 – 05:00寅 Tiger

A Traditional Korean Method: Physical Clues

In Korean BaZi tradition, experienced practitioners have long used physical characteristics and sleeping habits as clues to estimate an unknown birth hour. While this method is not a substitute for your actual birth time, it is a fascinating traditional approach passed down through generations of Korean BaZi masters.

Hair Whorl Position (가마)

The position of your natural hair whorl on the top of your head is traditionally associated with your birth hour branch:

Whorl PositionAssociated Branches
Center whorl子 · 午 · 卯 · 酉 — 왕지 (Peak Energy)
Slightly left or right of center寅 · 申 · 巳 · 亥 — 생지 (Growth Energy)
Double whorl or significantly off-center辰 · 戌 · 丑 · 未 — 고지 (Storage Energy)

Sleeping Position

Your natural sleeping posture is also traditionally used as a clue:

Sleeping PositionAssociated Branches
Flat on your back子 · 午 · 卯 · 酉
On your side or tossing and turning寅 · 申 · 巳 · 亥
On your stomach or curled into a ball辰 · 戌 · 丑 · 未

Note: These traditional methods offer a general indication only and should be used as a starting point for further exploration — not as a definitive answer.

Rectification: Finding Your Birth Time Through BaZi

Advanced BaZi practitioners use a technique called chart rectification to identify an unknown birth time by working backwards from major life events. By analyzing significant events in your life — career changes, relationships, major moves — a skilled practitioner can often identify the most likely Hour Pillar for your chart.

This is an advanced technique that requires significant experience and knowledge of BaZi theory.

The Most Important Thing

Even without your birth time, your BaZi chart contains an extraordinary amount of information about who you are and how your life unfolds. Your Day Master alone — combined with your Month and Year Pillars — tells a rich and detailed story.

Do not let an unknown birth time stop you from exploring the profound wisdom of BaZi.

Start with what you know. The journey of self-discovery begins with a single step.
